Is noticeably lower in volume when it does have to ramp up. Has none of that vacuum-like high-pitch quality to it at all, even at higher speeds and when "revving" up, and C. Does not nearly change speeds as frequently, dramatically, or noticeably, B.

Onto the fan noise.I can, without any doubt, tell you that the lottery is indeed real, as the fan on my exchange Pro A. Transferring a 1.2TB backup from a Western Digital MyPassport external drive took 15-16 hours on the SpinPoint, and 8-9 hours on the FireCuda.

It's also much faster in my relatively little testing. That sound is now gone, but the FireCuda is noisier overall. The SpinPoint drive had this weird type of sound when the action would get crazy that's hard to describe.almost like a cross between coil whine and beeping. This hard drive is definitely more noisy than the 2TB SpinPoint, with audible loading-type sounds when playing games, but it's not too too bad. When I exchanged my Pro, I also had the 2TB FireCuda drive come in from NewEgg, so I used that instead of the older 2TB SpinPoint. So I think from that we can deduce that Sony has multiple hardware vendors for parts, and the fan/heatsink might be included in that. My first Pro came with a Toshiba 1TB 5400 rpm drive, and my exchange Pro came with a HGST 1TB 5400 rpm drive. I also want to mention that I had been using a 2TB 5400rpm SpinPoint drive (specifically the one from the 2TB Seagate Backup Plus Slim). It was completely inaudible on the Home Screen, especially with no disc inserted.ĭue to Best Buy's return policy for holiday items until January 15th, I boxed mine up and exchanged it. Also of note is that the Pro would be almost inaudible on non-Pro optimized titles, so I'm guessing when the 2nd GPU isn't being utilized, the console itself would not get so hot as to need to spin up the fan at all. But the constant pitch-change of the fan of the Pro drove me nuts, and I honestly thought my launch unit was more pleasant-sounding despite blowing more loudly.

My launch PS4 was super loud compared to that one, the 2nd revision PS4 was much quieter, and the Pro fit somewhere in-between. In terms of actual volume, you know everyone is going to judge that differently based on environment and such, but I would put this type of fan noise as slightly louder than my 2nd revision PS4 (not the Slim, but the PS4 with the matte cover and physical buttons, specifically the one that came with the Uncharted Collection bundle last holiday season). I noted on mine that when running any PS4 Pro-optimized title of a higher frame rate or resolution, the fan would constantly spin up and down, up and down, possibly as much as 2-3 changes per second. Specifically, the fan noise wasn't too bad in terms of volume, but the fan would have a noticeable "vacuum-like" type of a high pitch sound, and it would change pitches/speeds very quickly. I purchased my Pro on Black Friday weekend, and I noted the same issues that Digital Foundry noted in their video review.

Wanted to update on my situation, I had posted earlier in the thread and haven't kept up with it, so I'm not sure if everyone has came to the same consensus.
